Methods for Popular Education Development
in Baltic Sea Area
All citizens of the member countries of the European Union have two parallel political systems - their own and that of the European Union. This is obviously something causing strain and questions about the democracy of the Union. It is therefore very important that as many citizens - especially the citizens of the new and future member states - as possible will have the opportunity to understand and learn more about the basic principles of democracy.
One way of handling this is to develop methods for implementing popular education transnationally. This Baltic Sea Academy project deals with teaching methods of adult education in the Baltic Sea Countries. The goal of the project is to update the information about the European Union and its historical roots. At the same time an attempt has been made to introduce a "new" adult teaching method , the Study Circle, which is a non-authoritarian form of studies and has a long tradition in the Swedish society, to all Baltic Sea Countries offering additional opportunities.
This work contains four different themes suitable to study in order to get an understanding for the development of the European Union. The four themes that you can download under documents are
 | | knowledge of democracy |
 | | knowledge of social movements |
 | | knowledge of history |
 | | knowledge of EMU |
For each of the themes a study guide is produced. The guidebooks are written with the assumption that the main method to use them is the study circle method. In the study circle method emphasis is laid on self-tuition, understanding and sharing of knowledge and experience with other adults of the study circle.
